Mr. Diel ROCKENFELLER

Diell and his brother Johann Peter sailed to America.They had been born in Germany. Diell was naturalized on 16 Dec 1737 in Palatine.

Diell settled in the Upper Hudson, not far from the Massachusetts line.

There have been Rockefellers in south central New York State since the 1830's, when they began migrating over the Catskills from Columbia Co, where most were farmers.

The Rockefellers of that generation were only a few removed from the original American settlers.

The earlier members of the family were Hugenots, French protestants driven out of France into Germany, where they are said to have changed the name from" Roquefeuille" to Rockefeller.

A romance in 1772 united the two Rockefeller branches in the U.S.

William, grandson of Johann Peter married his cousin Christina, "the lovely granddaughter of Diell. This took place at East Camp, on the Hudson, near Germantown. William & Christina Rockefeller had 10 children.

Diell Rockefeller came to New York with his wife and two children in 1733 and settled along the Hudson River which later became Columbia Co. He purchased land now located at the intersection of Rt. 9G and County Rd. 8 which is now called Lawrence's Corners.

He later increased his holdings to over 600 acres.

Diell Rockefeller was appantly an energetic man because following the erection of his home, he built a grist mill on a small creek that flowed not far from the house.

Soon after that he built a saw mill. Then after that he converted his home into a store and saloon by adding a wing.

When he died in 1769 his holdings were divided among his six sons.

Johann married Ms. Anna Gertrude ALSDORF about 1722 in Rendorf, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Anna was born about 1703 in Bonefield, Neuwied, Westerwald, Germany; died in 1769 in Germantown, Columbia County, New York. [Group Sheet]

Anton married Ms. Gertrude PAULI about 1685 in Rengsdorf, Neuwied, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Gertrude was born about 1665 in Rockenfeld, Neuwied, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany; and died. [Group Sheet]
