    Notes:

According to Louis P. deBoer in his "Pre-American Notes on Old
Netherland Families", this was origonally a Flemish family from the
Province of Zeeland in the Netherlands.

Protestent Flemish refugees had settled in large numbers in East Friesland, New Netherlands, and
who from 1558 on had come there either by way of England or Rineland.
(Ref. "The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey" Vol. IV,p.57).

"The combination of Joost and Carel in patronymical formation is very rare.
It is therefore remarkable to find a certain Carel Joosten marry on
Nov. 7, 1597, in the Dutch Reformed Church at Leyden, Michieltje
    Cornelis."

It was common to see Flemish families in the late 16th
century continually going back and forth between the Holland and the
Zeeland cities, especially from Leyden, Holland and Middelburg,
Zeeland. (Ref. Ibid, Vol X, p.321 and Baptisims, Vol D, fol.22).

Joost Carelsen (Joost, the son of Carel) first appeared in the
New Amsterdam court records on Dec. 22, 1653, and it is probable he
came to New Netherland (New York) not long before.

He was a ship builder, and his yard was at "Smith's Valley" on the west side of the
present Pearl St. between Wall St. and Franklin Square, which had been
    bought before May 17, 1661.

Joost became a member of the New York Dutch Church on May 28,
1701, when he was recorded as being from Middleburg. He and his wife
were still living in 1703, then over 60 years of age, according to the
New York City census that year.

All their children were baptised in the Dutch Reformed Church in New Amsterdam. They were known by their patronymic "Joosten", i.e. son or daughter of Joost, but when grown.

and married, all bore the full family name of van Sysen.

Notes received during trip to Bradford County, Pennsylvania

Hoost carelszen (van Sysen), the first American ancestor of the Van Sise f amily, was born in Middleburg, in the provice of Zeeland in the Netherland s, according to his statement upon joining the New York Dutch Church, prob ably about 1630. As he first appeared in the New Amsterdam court Recor ds on Dec. 22, 1653, and fairly feequently thereafter, it is probable th at he came to New Netherland not long before. Accoding to Mr. de Boor (o p. cit.) he was a ship builder in partnership with Hendrick Lambertezen Mo l, and their yard was at "Smith's Valley" on the west side of the prese nt Pearl street between Wall St. and Franklin Square (VNY73), which had be en bought before May 17, 1661 (RNA 2:7). Vanentine listed his proper ty in 1674 as of "4thclass" and estimated his wealth at $500 (ibid); in t he tax list of Mar 7, 1698 his property was valued at 10pounds (TNYHS 2:25 0). Joost became a member of the New York Duthch Church on May 28, 170 1, when he was recored as being from Middleburg (GBR25:259). He and h is wife were still living in 1703, then over sixty uears of age, accordi ng to the New York City census of that year. His wife, whom he probably m arried in Holland, was Styntje Jan of unknown paretage
